Well, it's not "classic" in the sense that it's old Movie...but I consider it a classic:

It actually saw a VHS release in the states too. But like some bugs bunny cartoons it's too politcally uncorrect for Disney to consider a release (even the crowes in Dumbo is less bigoted than Uncle remus)

Actually, the VHS release of Song of the South was in the UK, not the US. It was in Pal version and you had to convert it to work on US VHS machines.

I remember my parents used to take us to see that movie every single time it came out in theaters and I had no memories of there being anything inappropriate in it.

I have seen it as an adult in one of the converted formats and although I can understand that some might be offended by the tar baby and maybe the way some of the actors talked; it was a really good film and to me it was more of a story about how friendship and love doesn't have color or social barriers and it took a kid and Uncle Remus' character to show the other characters of the movie this valuable lesson.

You guys forgot the granddaddy of them all...Birth of a Nation.

That's were the KKK are the good guys...and the Union black soldiers (played by white actors in blackface)...with their evil "mulatto" leader...the baddies.

Great film in terms of technical achievement for its time though....D.W. Griffith was a great pioneer director...but that subject matter...well...kinda comical now.

The moral of the Birth of a Nation story...don't mix the races...or you'll get an evil "mulatto" kidnapping white women...lol.

That reminds me of another one that I have never seen "Mammy" made in 1930.

I don't even know what to say.

Yep, the film only got three official home video releases, VHS in UK, and laserdisc in Japan and Hong Kong....that's it. Everything else is an unauthorized release, including every DVD of the film that you find out there.

I remember going to the theatre with my mom and sister to see the last theatrical release SONG OF THE SOUTH ever had (mid 80s?), I'm glad I had the opportunity to do so.
