however, note that they all have flared leatherette gauntlets. i can now say that one of the more heated debates internally was plastic gloves vs. oven mitts vs. colored hands and matching gauntlets. you now see the result of that debate. reasoning? now they can hold accessories

superman head: yes, the sculpt is new. we all agreed that the original looked like an american indian in retrospect, so our challenge here was how mego would approach the sculpt given all the ways the character had been portrayed in the media. andy came up with a sculpt that our guy at mattel (hi bill!) said gave him "the chills". "s curl" is where it belongs, his jaw is more square, sideburns trimmed, etc.

costume is virtually untouched. i think we added red belt loops and that was it.

Also a sentiment that was the source of heated debate and you see the result. The overall philosophy behind these figures is something to the effect of "if MEGO never closed, how would they balance their style with the more strict compliances of character style guides and corporate initiatives?"

That said, we had a "He likes it, hey Mikey!" moment with one of the stricter people on the approval chain when we presented the first few and he approved them with barely a comment. In fact, the only time we had to revise a head was when we submitted a never-done-before character and we were told that he looked too style guide and not "Mego-innocent" enough. So yeah, they get it.

That's the best part -- our lord and benefactor, the great Marty Abrams made this happen.

After doing the right thing by the Abramses with Star Trek and Apes, Marty repaid the favor by talking to his longtime friend who is President of one of the Mattel divisions and said, "make this happen". An assist from his son Ken, who also has high-up ties at Mattel.

So, it goes to show that even in the scummy business world, it pays to do the right thing.

Well, congratulations, Joe and Paul. That's a hell of a mountain you all climbed. Well done! For those of us who have been watching Paul pursue this like a bulldog for the last what is it, TWELVE years or so? It's remarkable.

I'm very glad they will be somewhat different from the originals in their details, I think that preserves the specialness of the vintage Megos that will always be my first love.
