GI Joes vs. Megos

To any kid who grew up in the 70's, these were the 2 most popular action figure lines. They each had their strong points. For instance, Megos reflected our fave comic books and TV shows, and the 8" figures were portable. While GI Joe offered much play value w/ the many playsets, accessories and outfits, were very poseable and had that cool life-like hair.

True we're all Mego fans, but truthfully now, which action figure line got more of your playtime when you were a kid?

Mego, I loved me some Big Jim and Bulletman but both lines went away when I was six.

Leaving the prime years of 7 and 8 completely to Mego Superheroes, apes and Star Trek.

I was an 80's kid,so i played mostly with Star Wars,Thundercats,He-man,Wrestling and my favorites were the 3 3/4 Gi joe line.But I collected both 12" and mego figures,just would'nt play much with either.But I always leaned towards Gi joe more

I never even knew of the 12" Joe until well into the mid-80s. I totally missed the boat on those. I had plenty of the RAH buggers though.

But Mego wins hands down. WGSH alone makes them the clear winnah. The only real opposition for them in favorite toys of youth was Super Powers, for obvious reasons.

I love Gi Joes my Favorite was Bulletman which I had as a kid..my Wife reBought it for me as a Bday gift....and I also love big Jims but nothing can top my Megos.

I loved G.I. Joe, I played a good deal with the 12" line, the Super Joe line, and for a short time the Real American Hero line, they did offer alot of play value. But to echo much of the previous sentiment in this thread, nothing could top my Megos. I was enamored of them as a kid (and still am!) I played with them far more than any of my other toys, with only Star Wars being a close second.

I got some hand-me-down Joes as a kid (were talking 60's Adventure team stuff) and they just didn't have the rocks like my Megos did, I would have "Hulkie" fighting giant soliders and Hulkie would always win! He would have trouble so I would call in Superman, Shazam and the Duke Boys for backup so Hulkie and friends made Megos win the day and this discussion for that fact.

I still have my GI Joe Talking Commander in the box (with inserts) from 1972 and he still speaks clearly! I loved the Joes but when Action Jackson and the World's Greatest Superheroes came along, boy did Joe get the competition. The Adventure Team sets and figures were staple gifts from Santa from 1971 to 1976. I loved running into our family room around 4 AM to see that eye catching artwork from the classic Adventure Team series - remember those great sets? Eight Ropes of Danger was my all time favorite.

Of course you had a slew of other lines too. You had Evel Knievel, Big Jim, Johnny West, AHI monster figures, Kenner Six Million Dollar Man series, and I held onto my 60's hold overs like Captain Action. But Mego set the standard for how I would see superheroes for the rest of my life. The play value was limitless and the cost was managable too so I was able to collect quite a few without driving my folks broke (although I did drive them crazy asking for them).

I have such a massive collection of all things mentioned here, but I often get asked the same question - which is my favorite? Tough question because it's like asking which of your kids you love the most. You love them all. I think Spidey was extra special for me because before he came out kids really didn't have anything to replicate the adventures they watched every day from the '67 classic animated series (LOVE that show to this very day). SO when I saw him on the shelf, it was... a religious experience.
