Mego of the Day: Jean LaFitte

It was a toss up between Jean and the cookie duster and overall Grandpa Walton for today's "Moustache Week" entry. Jean won out, mostly due to him being a pirate and that fact that he defended America in 1812. Making him an "outlaw hero" in the vein of Han Solo.

Plus I may want to do an "old coots" week somewhere down the road and without Grandpa Walton, I'd have to use Uncle Jessie twice.....

The Pirate line is so cool. Jean is probably my least favorite of the set though. Probably because the sculpt just looks so... clean cut. I think he was an accountant before hitting the high seas.

He really does look like a guy from the next cubicle over.

Not only did I not know about the Pirates when I was a kid, when I returned to Mego as a big kid, it took me a bit to realize these were not the Matchbox figures. I guess my lack of a nostalgic connection to them has never really pulled me to these figures. I've chased down a bunch from the other Legends lines, but this one has yet to turn on the urge.

HE might make an interesting Tony Stark, however.

I was never a fan of the Pirates, but I always liked this one.

I think because his sculpt reminds me of Dick Smothers

I want all the pirates. Pirates rule. I have a couple pretty nice Matchbox ones, and half the Castaway Pirates, but I need to get some Mego ones so they can band together and invade Barbados or Indiana.

Never had, or knew of the pirates as a kid, but they are cool. Lafite's color combos are...intersting, but he's still a nice figure. And he does indeed look like Dick Smothers!

Pretty sure the sculpt came from Yul Brynner playing Jean Lafitte in "The Buccaneer"

He was the most elusive Pirate for me to find,
and the last 8" figure I needed to complete my original collection.

I bought him from Mark Huckabone as he was setting up his table at the 1997 Mego Con in Toledo.

    Still one of my favorites.
