for a minute there, i thought we were gonna talk about shoes.![]()
Having just driven about 1500 miles in the UK in the last month, and having lived in Scotland in the past. . . .not many folks have garages. . . .you struggle to find a place to park your car on the street near where you live. No garages to have a sale from. . . .and a lot of folk in the UK are out to make a quick sale. . . .from the back of the car. . . then ready to leg it. . . .just in case the fuzz show up! It all fell off the back of a truck you see. . . straight into the boot.
I found a nice 10 inch Capt Scarlet with removable hat and weapon, for UK$10 (GBP), and a 9 inch Tonto at the same place for GBP $9 at the same shop. It had a toy museum and a toy shop - in a place called Calender, just west of Sterling in Scotland. The guy hadn't heard of Mego. . .I was shocked because most of his stuff was from about that era. I took some pics in the shop - they had one of the Lone Ranger play sets in the box (which was ripped and damaged), that I had when I was a kid. . .so I got a pick of my 8 year old holding it, since I was about his age when I got it. . .and he looks like me (sadly).
I just realised
I should have said Palitoy and NOT Mego. . .shouldn't I!!

well boot sales are exactly what they sound like... selling stuff out the boot or trunk of your car
a yard or garage sale is a static thing, you can drive your car or van to a boot sale where another number of cars are situated all selling goods on tables from the boots of the cars
the boot sale i got these from there were around 200 cars there, ive been to sales where 400-500 cars have shown up
thats lots of delving into toy boxes and plastic bags
its a proper workout on a sun morn
back in the day id come home from a boot sale laiden down with sacks of star wars fiures and stuff... not these days though, there are "dealer" tables at boot sales now lol
and it wont be long before the goverment get involved in the undeclared income that you earn at one of these sales... ive done bootsales before now, ive earned between £100-£300/$600 on a sat morn, not bad for a few hours work
i dont bother with selling at them these days, the "ill give you a pound" brigade got on my nerves after a while... no matter if you have a wind up walking r2d2 in the baggie for £250 you will get someone say ill give you £1 for it![]()
Boot sales have provided me with a few bits and bats, but generally it really is just absolute cr*p that people sell.
I found a vintage Action Man for 20p. I have also had a few Corgi cars as well. I have never found a Mego - I still hope to stumble upon one though. The best buy I made was a Stock Car Scalextric set. I paid £8 for it, kept the track and sold the two cars on Ebay for a shade under £80.
The car boot sale local to me attracts the scum of the earth, both buyers and sellers, so I tend to stay away nowadays.
You used to be able to find some really good vintage clothing but again those halycon days have passed.
The only other item that I often did well with were chrome car spotlamps which always ended up on my old Lambretta scooter.
