    Holy Licensing Royalties Batman!

    With the recent addition of Star Trek and Planet of the Apes galleries to the Azrak Hamway section of the site, you had to know this would be coming. If there is one character that AHI did the most with, it would be the caped crusader, thanks to my pal Bill Frost I've got some pretty amazing examples.

    The Batmobile was one of the most marketable items in Batman's rouster, thanks mainly to the George Barris design from the 1966 television series.

    Batman in a parachute, actually the most logical parachute figure AHI made.

    Spin Batman until he puckes!

    This is just a sample for much more check out the new AHI Batman Toy Gallery.

    I had a good number of those. Man, the packaging was all over the place, which I love. The variety of artwork from one item to the next was astonishing. You won't see that in today's style guide-driven market. Sigh.

    That insane Joker is from this classic Neal Adams cover of Batman #251;

    It's exactly what I love about vintage packaging, the all over the place variety. It's interesting to see the AHI Trek stuff. The Trek title design and some art was taken from the Gold Key Trek Comics (the Enterprise shown on sky diving Kirk is straight out of a Gold Key comic) and the "Soaring Enterprise" had art taken from the Star Trek Colorforms. It makes me wonder what the "rules" were for cribbing other companies package and comic art designs.

    I'm thinking that back then, if the property was licensed then they could go and get art from other licensed products if need be.
