Anyone else ever own a telescope ?

I used to be bigtime into astronomy growing up.

My first telescope was a cheap reflector back in the 70's .....
    It was horrible .....

After that I got a cheap refractor ......
That one was pretty cool .....
First time I ever seen the polar ice-caps on Mars, Saturn's rings and Jupiter..

Lastly, I got a pair of Astronomical Binoculars (in the 80's)
Dished out $250.00 for them ......
They were pretty cool ........ Not very strong, but you could see a lot of low light stuff like the Andromeda Galaxy and the nebula in Orion etc and a few comets..

    Today, I don't do much stargazing ........
But growing up, I loved it

Anyone else a casual fan of astronomy ?

You just know someone will mention Uranus.

I been wanting to buy a Telescope for a while now...well ever

since we moved to our new house...It would be nice to gaze at the heavens

from my garden...with a flask of tea of course.

That was something I always wanted. One birthday I asked for either a telescope or a microscope. I got my second choice. I've thought about getting one for my cottage. It's about 100 miles from a city of 250,000 so the sky is chock full of stars. It's amazing looking at the sky when there is no light pollution.

So what would be a decent, reasonably priced telescope? I've never seen Mars' polar ice caps.

Not a good subject for me.

I was working for a company for 10 years and they allowed us to pick an employee recognition reward as a gift. I picked a pretty nice telescope (probably around $500) and was able to do some major star gazing.

When my now 7 year old was a toddler he knocked the telescope over dented the tube and broke the mirrors. My wife has suggested seeing how much to have it fixed but it probably is worthless. It is still sitting around (I haven't had the heart to pitch it yet).
