    Mego in Popular Science Magazine

When I was a kid in the 1970's, my dad subscribed to Popular Science magazine. I always enjoyed reading them to see what was just over the horizon. Back in the 1970's, Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome houses were the "next big thing". Popular Science even published plans to build your own dome house.

In the April 1974 issue, the architect who designed the plans built a model showing potential interior floor plans for the dome. Looks like he built it Mego scale. Here are a couple photos from the issue showing what looks like a Mego Type I Superman figure dressed in his "Clark Kent casual" attire. Maybe Clark used these plans to build his Fortress of Solitude.

      Neat find!!!

I had a schoolmate whose family lived in a geodesic dome house. I went over to hang out a few times and always thought it was cool.

          Ha! That's pretty cool.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Another example of how much Mego worked its way into the cultural landscape of the 70s. Its funny how many people our age that tell me they never heard of this odd figure I collect. Then I show them an 8" figure and they say, "Oh yeah! I remember those."

BTW, the pics show more of the future than home design. Clark look to be wearing baggy, oversized "boyfriend" jeans. A fashion that won't hit until the 80's and has made a big comeback to day (but with worn, fringed hems.
