    Evil Town

“Evil Town” is a movie I have a weird relationship with, I rented it with my friends in high school and even then, I could tell it was a mashup of two films from different decades. I completely forgot the title but about every five years or so I go through this whole “What was that stupid movie called?” and I watch it again.
It’s so unmemorable that I also always forget there is a lot of nudity (something 16-year-old boys would generally bookmark).
It’s about a town (population 666) where all the elderly residents are in on some mad doctors plan to live forever, they abduct every tourist and give them to the Doctor for “experiments” (a bunch of people with cheap makeup writhing on the floor of a gymnasium) and they get to live forever in liver spot heaven.
Dean Jagger appears to be reading his lines for the first time (His pronunciation of “Pet-Two-Iterry” is priceless) and the ending is boring.
I leave this post as a note to self, it’s called Evil Town, don’t watch it a fourth time.

Apparently, this is a movie he did in '74 called "Dr. Shagetz" that is now lost. This thing is like an onion, it has so many layers. There is also another version of this film called "Evils of Night" that stars Tina Louise and porn stars. It never ends.

Really, so his footage actually predates some of his shakier efforts? Hmmm. I've not seen it, thought I'd read there are multiple versions.

Wait, is this the Dean Jagger who played Charlie in the classic Partridge Family Christmas episode, “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town, Santa” (and oh yeah, also won an Oscar for best supporting actor in “Twelve O’clock High”, and appeared as Major General Waverly in a little-known film called “White Christmas”?
Maybe I need to give it a watch lol

I read your post as “Sean, why have you never watched this movie? It sounds terrible and also right up my alley for a night I’ve turned my brain off already”

I too am saddened to see Dean Jagger had to stoop to these types of films by the end of his career. But heck, Joseph Cotten made some real stinkers around this same period.

Cotton was quite good in Dr. Phibes.

You could look at it as they were already at retirement age and still pulling decent paychecks, albeit for generally inferior work. There are some gems mixed in and I’m guessing some of these old studio actors might have enjoyed getting to ham it up a bit. Why let Vincent Price have all the fun?

Cameron Mitchell has to be the king of doing low rent crap after his glory days.

Oh, I definitely agree. But he also did Lady Frankenstein. He probably didn't see much difference between the two projects, but most fans do now.

Wowzers, yeah, you're right. Just flipped through his IMDB listings. I think there's stuff in there John Carradine would have looked at and said "Pass".

Cameron Mitchell’s name seems to pop up in one in every five movies as I scroll through schlocky 70’s horror movies.

Mitchell did a sequel in the early 80s to a movie that was made for like 50k, it's absolute dreck. I listened to the commentary (because for some reason I own it) and it's hilarious, he was there for a day and a half, didn't know his lines, and apparently wandered around in full costume to buy a hotdog.

He had zero shame and I love him for it.
