Captain America: The First Avenger film question

Watched Captain America: The First Avenger last night.

REALLY liked the movie a lot.

One thing I don't think was addressed in the movie …

Why does the Red Skull look like he does with a Red Skull face ?

Did the original doctor that made him and Cap botch the experiment ?

If so I don't think the movie alluded to it.

In the movie he just rips off his mask and then without explanation proceeds with his evil non-exposition villainy

Yeah, Erskine's formula wasn't perfected yet, but Schmidt went ahead and used it anyway. Also, Erskine says it enhances everything about a person, so since Schmidt had a twisted, ugly soul...he got physically ugly.

Go watch Craven's Swamp Thing. Exact same idea at work between Holland/Arcane and Rogers/Schmitt. It's better explained by Craven.
