    Killer Pastrami

So, my Wife hates Guy Fieri. If you're not familiar with who he is, he's an "over-the-top" restaurateur and host to some shows on the Food Network. Anthony Bourdain described him as a cross between Billy Idol and Kung Fu Panda. Anyway, one day she grudgingly gave in to watching one of his Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with me, and it featured this Pastrami place called Norton's. Now, I loves me some Pastrami, and living in the L.A. area I have access to some pretty damn good sources from Tops, The Hat and the world famous Langer's Deli (since 1947), but there was something special about this little Norton's place up in Santa Barbara. They go through about 320 lbs. of Pastrami a week, so they must be doing something right. Dennis Miller was there when Guy rolled in. He was saying some funny things about the importance of keeping a Pastrami Sandwich simple, as only he could:

"Basics, Baby, I don’t need all the augmentations; what are you kidding me here? You come in with the Spice Girls? I just want ‘Strami on a roll."

This place was amazing. Well worth the 2 hour drive. They cut the Pastrami thick and that grill is seasoned with bacon all day long, so the 'Strami (as Dennis calls it) has that extra flavor.

Take out only, for now, so they recommended that we walk to their nearby City Hall, that's surrounded by a park. Worked out great.

Simple: 'Strami on Rye with Brown Deli Mustard and thick cut Pickles.

    Lord have mercy.

They cater to heathens, too. They offer a PLT, making a Pastrami Patty,

and putting it on top of the Lettuce and Tomato slices over a Chipotle Mayo spread.

Those pics are from Guy's DD&D episode. We're heading up there this coming weekend and I'll be ordering the Mikey Special.

              Man, that looks delicious.

Guy Fieri gets too much crap. He's entertaining, and a good TV personality. I enjoy his shows, and have eaten at a few places featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. No offense to the late Anthony Bourdain, but he seemed like the kind of guy I would never want to meet, because he was probably not a pleasant guy to hang out with. I would bet Guy would make for a much more pleasant experience.

Wow that place looks amazing and tasty!

We really enjoy Guy's shows. We watch DD&D's all the time, and even enjoy Guys Grocery Games. He's entertaining, and my kids think I'm on his wavelength as they'll notice I'll say something regarding what's happening on the show and then pop, he's saying the same thing. Similarities stop at that...

Why is pastrami always so expensive ?

I thought it's made from brisket -- which I always thought was a cheap cut of meat

BBQ brisket is expensive as well. Maybe the prep and duration time could be a factor.

I found this Wall Street Journal article that explains a few things...

That sounds amazing. I might have to take a drive to try it out. I went to Bakersfield not too long ago to try a place called Saltys which was featured on Guys show. I’ve stopped every time since then on my way back from LA for their brisket.
