I Add Star Wars to Other Paintings

Reddit user DaveRuinsArt is a guy who takes unsold paintings at thrift stores and adds Star Wars characters and ships to them. Nothing great, art-wise, but a lot of fun.

This may sound odd, but as an artist myself, if those are original paintings, I kind of take offense at an artist who defaces the work of other artists.

      Not cool IMO.

He should consider branching out with Godzilla characters.

Not odd all, from an artist's perspective. Not being an artist, I guess I see it more as giving new life to some paintings that would have ultimately been thrown out after sitting, unpurchased and forgotten in his thrift store. But I could absolutely see how the original artist might not have my perspective.

Yeah, I see the potential for this with all different additions- Sesame Street, anachronisms, even other art genres like cubist figures in these types of pastoral settings.

There's a long tradition of using past art and found objects in new art. And also, once art makes that segue from individual expression to commodity, all sorts of things can happen.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I've thought about doing this but never could find my niche. I probably wouldn't do it with original art but the prints i find at thrift stores are totally fair game.

I agree. Prints fine, but painting over some one else's original art I'm not too keen on. Gives me kind of the same vibe of those amateur "restorers" defacing famous works of art. Makes me cringe.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Hmm, a line of Where's the Sleestak paintings/prints from "Palitoy" might be fun. Even as a fun activity page in Toy Ventures-How many Sleestaks can you find hidden in this picture?

I don’t know, he’s buying the art at thrift stores. Not all art is valuable. I’m reminded every comic convention when I flip thru the 25 cent bin and see every comic I’ve ever worked on.

It's not about the monetary value. Someone already put their artistic vision into those paintings. Besides defacing their work, he is doodling on someone else's work and reselling as his own. It just rubs me the wrong way. He could paint totally original paintings to the same effect without altering another artist's work.

I'm sure you wouldn't want someone doodling over your original pencils. I know I'd be furious if someone painted over one of my paintings, regardless of how much money they're worth.
Think about all the famous artists whose work wasn't appreciated until after their deaths. Imagine if someone had defaced their work when it was considered worthless.

Once I sell or give away art, it’s up to whomever to do with what they want. It’s not mine anymore. If it ended up at a thrift store and someone paints over it, so be it. If I wanted it so bad, I should have kept it.

He's not even buying them from thrift stores. He's taking them from his thrift store he owns after they sit for months without no interest in buying them. I suppose he could wait even longer, but it seems their fate is to collect dust before being thrown in the dumpster out back. I feel like he's saving them from being crushed in a trash truck.

I had no idea this might devolve into a debate on art. But that's why I love this place- always opens me up to different perspectives.

I hope the artist who sculpted the Mego Jordache guy's head isn't too upset with me adding some sculpey and turning him into Dr Strange!

Hey, I have experience with that too!!

I get paid when I turn in a sculpt and whatever happens after that happens. A bunch of you all goofed up my Cliff sculpt BTW!! Haha, I say go for it!
