    Toy-Ventures: AHI Action Apeman

Clearly inspired by the Mego Planet of the Apes action figures, the AHI Action Apeman are some of the boldest knock offs ever produced, I'll explain why I think that in this video.

The First issue of Toy-Ventures is coming this August.

Yes!, and with many variants to keep your hunt on for years!

I only wish Tong would have diversified their offerings (not quite as many outfits) as the superior bootleg release of the two. It's really cool that both companies had their own universe of other figures for Apeman to seek action within.

One of these days we need a deep-Tong-state discovery… so little advertising, catalogue documentation, insider info out there. I always contemplate the possibilities of seeing Tong's offerings hanging next to Mego/Toltoys in the Aussie shops. Simian Spectacle!

I have a feeling that Tong was mainly a white label "For hire" manufacturer along the lines of BARTER. The trouble is, they never come up in anything. I should go ask Eddy, the other guy I know who collects toy trades.

^^ That's really what I think too, but I keep holding out hope… they made a ton of figures (with popular European/North American themes) within a short period of time it seems, certainly capitalizing on Mego's international success. There's a rival tale in there somewhere!

Well, there is definitely some sort of connection between Australia and SOMA the company that did AHI's manufacturing in the Seventies (they broke up in 1980).

When the 89 Batman movie hit, you got a reissue of AHI and Mego product and the cherry on top being the Tong Batman. The connection was likely SOMA, who are, still in biz.

They are jovial looking little fellows. I'll give them that. I can see them appealing to little kids because of it.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
