In the 80 plus years Superman has been around there's obviously going to be bad writing, cringy and down right horrible stories. So, it's not that Superman or Wonder Woman or Batman haven't done terrible things in the comics over the years, they have. The thing is, they shouldn't have. Also, Superman doing something terrible years or decades ago isn't an excuse or justification for him to do it now.

The only reason Superman kills is because a writer wanted him too. There's always a way out. Like in Superman 2 when Superman led Zod and his minions away from the city to stop all the destruction. They could have done modern style destruction porn and fought to the death there and leveled the city. But they didn't. Superheroes are a fantasy limited only by a writer's imagination and thirst for violence.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

My objection was the movie sucking.

everything about the movie was dark. it was all washed out, gray settings and colors. Superman is supposed to be about hope and a brighter future

Snyder does not get that at all. He totally missed the opportunity to play the dark of the Batman off Superman's hope.

              because....

in Superman 2, we were on Team Superman. We were cheering everything he did.
We were on the journey with him.
We felt the threat of ZOD and hated him. We knew he was the bad guy and we didn't like him.
We felt the danger of ZOD destroying Metropolis.
When Superman got his powers back, we cheered.
When he asked Zod to step outside, we cheered.
When they fought in the Fortress, we were worried, then Superman switched on the lights and we cheered.
Superman crushed that jerk's hand and threw him away, we cheered.

              In Man Of Steel...
We observed a man struggling with his identity.
we watched a man looking for clues to his past. We were never quite on his Team.
we encouraged him, but were never WITH him.
we watch him do things. We watched the city get destroyed with beautiful displays of Special Effects.
We were never quite emotionally invested quite like Superman 2.
We watched as characters dealt with negativity.
When Superman snapped Zod's neck, we watched a man struggle with the decision.
we were never on his team.
              never had his back.
we were watching to see what choice he would make.
and when he made that choice, The Audience together thought...
"aw man, I wouldn't have done that."

              Henceforth, Superman was found unrelatable.
              Unidentifiable.

just a guy on the screen making poor choices.

              That's why.

I concur with what Art is saying, adding that audiences expectations with a Superman movie is to see the human ideal, a super powered man who is what we all strive to be in some respects. Man of Steel's Superman tries to make you feel sorry for a Superman who comes off as a little petty and well, a sourpuss.

How in the age of Chris Evan's turn on Captain America, WB thought a traditional Superman wouldn't work is beyond me.

Great points, Art. And I agree, Brian, with the Evans comparison. Superman and Cap are the respective moral compass in each of their universes. Marvel and Evans proved that a sincerely GOOD person with firm convictions CAN appeal to modern audiences, without being corny. Reeve's Superman worked the same way against the post-Viet Nam, post-Watergate world of the 70s. The fact that Snyder and WB can't see that proves just how off course things have gotten at DC, both in comics and much of their media.

                      very good points.

we have seen for years now that WB does not have a clue how to handle their properties. Maybe we will finally get something really good from Abrams

I wanna write a SUPERMAN movie.
I can fix him and make him awesome.

I was involved in a back and forth phone tag pitch idea session at one point.
a few years before Man Of Steel.

Goyer made some comments about why they had him kill Zod. It was all excuse making about taking risks not writing safe. He had no reason other than they wanted to do something different. Weakest tea possible.

couldn't just exile Zod and keep him on a back burner for later use. At least they used his carcass for Doomsday.
