R.I.P. to the legendary Joe Sinnott

The legendary artist/inker has passed after a period of failing health. He was among the best inkers for Kirby and his contributions to comics are enormous.

I have to confess I'm unfamiliar with him--my appreciation of Kirby is mainly through Kamandi and Mike Royer.

I believe the general consensus is that Sinnott and Royer were the two best Kirby inkers. Generally speaking, I think Sinnott smoothed Kirby out a bit. I think it totally suited the FF run they did together. For example, there's a slickness to Silver Surfer that I don't think anyone else captured as well. In my opinion the high water-mark of the series started when Sinnott joined the team, and it's easily my favourite run of superhero comics, so his work was very important to me.

and Royer kept things a bit closer to the pencils, I'd argue. He captured more of the Kirby raw energy. Completely suited his DC run - particularly Kamandi and Demon. Oh man - I love the way those books look.

People argue which was best, but I just love them both!

Kirby's best inker at Marvel, bar-none. And he stayed on the FF book for decades and kept the look of the book consistent. Had the most sublime inkline of any of his peers. RIP.

Brazoo, thank you for the analysis--I will check out the FF run in more detail.

What a legend, his inks on Jack Kirby's pencil's on the Fantastic Four were some of the finest. R.I.P Joe Sinnott.

FYI. The John Byrne run also had Joe on it and he and John kicked ***. Brilliant man, he will be missed.

                RIP Joe.
