Man. He was 81. Hadn't occurred to me. He was just one of those ageless writers who was always around. I'm glad he was able to see his impact.

Very bummed by this. Truly one of comics greatest writers, and also a great editor for the Batman titles in the late 80s and all of the 90s.

His legacy is undeniable. He will be missed, but remembered.

I think my favorite O'Neil run is still the Question series he did with Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkewicz.

His Batman stuff had such an impression on me. He and Adams define Batman for me to this day.

I'm so sad to hear this. He was a staple of Batman comics. RIP!

Many things that happened to Batman under his editorship irked me and still do, sometimes I think he made Batman ascendant but utterly screwed-up. But he was a legendary storyteller, MRP rightly mentions The Question and I liked Green Arrow/Green Lantern as well.

I second the appreciation of the O'Neil/Adams Batman and I was just reading some of his Capt. Marvel stuff, too. A true legend, RIP.
