    Pod Stallions 76: Space:1999

We're back and once again joined by David Weiner, former editor of Famous Monsters and director of the upcoming film "In Search of Tomorrow" for a deep dive into Gerry Anderson's seminal 1970s space opera "Space:1999"

We discuss the interesting story behind the making, David's conversations with Martin Landau, first season vs second and of course, the merchandise!

Perfect for my hour-long long walk I take each evening along the tumbleweed covered, Coronvirus-emptied streets of Boston.

Yet another great one. This is a show I really need to watch--it's rewatch really but it's been so long since i saw it I feel like i'm starting over.

I was intrigued by the discussion of merchandise for a non-family or non-kids show. Things were definitely different then as opposed to now, especially pre-Star Wars. I do think Kojak had considerable branding in many realms, even given its violence, with Telly Savalas and his lollipop becoming a fixture in the popular conscious and being featured as part of Bob Hope specials and other "gag" bits. There was even a Kojak/Columbo/Sherlock Holmes recurring sequence on Electric Company. But I think sf shows were often eyed by merchandisers, and I'm sure the Anderson pedigree did help.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

Loved it, thanks guys! One of my favorite sci-fi shows, I'm glad you chatted about it.

Listening to it made my son and I start watching it. It's on Tubi and the Roku channel for free.
