I was always under the impression that the full scale mockup was just to represent the nose of the ship, the rest being hidden from view under the lake surface. This was thrown out the window when they reused the prop in subsequent movies, though.Comment

Supercool JB! The teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake have no idea what's coming!
The original Icarus concept drawings indicate it was a landing craft (as part of a large launch rocket and fuel source) and capable of re-entry. Subsequently it's been re-imagined as a whole unit by several artists referencing the space technology of the era. It's cool ship with some mystery… NASA should clearly build one soon!Comment

Even in beneath the wreckage is made to simulate more to the ship than we've seen but this was abandoned by "Escape". The TV series at least reduced the ship's interior to match it's exterior.
