Mego Batman- Counter Display Box and Mego Shipping Case

Hello, first time user of this forum. I signed up not as a collector of Mego, but rather as part of research I've been doing for a few family items I've held onto for many years.

The quick version of the story. Back in 1971/1972 my parents mail ordered a Mego Batman doll for my brother. What arrived was a case of Mego Batman dolls. After a conversation with the store and gifting one for Christmas, the box with the dolls sat idle in our house. Throughout the years some of the Batman dolls were sold or given away to friends or colleagues. Today, 12 Mego Batman dolls remain mint in their box. From what I can tell they are 1972, without the removable cowl.

I've done research on the Mego Museum site to learn as much as I can about the market as I was considering finding and buying Mego Batman dolls of the same type/year to complete the case again. That was my foucs until I read about the counter display boxes and shipping case information on the Mego Museum site, which appear to be very rare, if they exist at all anymore. Well, as part of this story, the remaining 12 Mego dolls are sitting safely in an original, not opened for display counter display box. I also have the original Mego shipping case that the counter box was delivered in.

So, what else can you tell me about my display box and shipping case? Are these really that rare? Are they desirable for Mego collectors? Is there more information about them that you could share?

    Thank you!

Welcome aboard, Display boxes like the one you show are indeed rare and collectible.

I'm of a mixed mind on the idea of whether or not it being full of Batmen would bring more money than selling them individually, either way it's a wonderful piece.

Very cool, very rare and very desirable! They are not from 1971 or 1972, though. They are from 1975/1976. The counter display box features Mego's "new logo" which was not introduced until 1976. The shipping box features the five-digit code for the 1975/76 DC Assortment #1 ("51310"), which was supposed to include an assortment of Aquaman, Superman, Robin, Batman, Green Arrow, and Shazam figures (not all Batman). This assortment was advertised in 1975 Christmas catalogs, mail order ads, and circulars.

Yeah that assortment in that box should have contained 8pcs Batman, 6 pcs. Robin, 3 pcs. Superman, Shazam 2pc. Aquaman and Arrow.

Mego didn't get into solid cases of one character until after they abandoned Window Boxes.

Even cooler that it looks like a JCPenney label on the top of the shipping box. Freaking amazing!

Thanks all for the feedback! My dad just told me a great story about JC Penny when he drove to their store to tell them about the full case shipment.

It’s been fun weaving together the story with parents along with the product history.

I wanted to share with everyone the next chapter of my counter display, shipping box and Batman dolls. They are in an upcoming Hakes auction and can be followed here, if interested.
