Question for Davey and Goliath fans

Was reading a Mego Museum Monster Movies Forum thread Silly TV That Scared The Bejeebers Out Of You As A Kid and it gave me chills remembering something today …

The episode of Davey and Goliath featured Davy (being very mad and vindictive) shoving a boy's face into wet concrete to the point of the boy drowning in it.

After 40+ years I got upset again thinking about it.. (really effected me that badly)

Did some internet research today ..

Can't find much on the subject.

Was this all a bad dream ?

I was just remembering the episode where they put on deep sea diver outfits and went to get a Jeep that fell off of the ferry into the water. That really sounds like something from Moral Orel, the Adult Swim Cartoon Network parody though.

I'm pretty sure Davey never killed a kid on that show. Drowning or otherwise. Maybe you're mistaking Davey for Gumby. Gumby killed lots of kids. I vividly remember the episode where Gumby beat a kid to death with a baseball bat simply because he took a ride on Pokey without asking permission first.

You more than likely processed a bad dream as a memory.

Art Clokey had an odd sense of humor.

Was doing some research this morning (in other words, googling)

        Apparently it wasn't a dream …

It almost seems like there's a mass conspiracy to keep this episode forgotten …

The episode was called "What's His Name" from 1972 … episode 58

A few fatigue descriptions from the internet …

"Davey imagines gruesome revenges against a new kid who's crossed him."

"But then there was the time Davey fantasized about killing a rival in a way one could associate with any number of sadistic Quentin Tarantino characters or maybe meaner members of Mafia clans. A kid got Davey framed for writing his name in wet cement, and Davey is understandably upset. So he fantasizes about violent revenge, as you do, and imagined pressing the rival kid’s face in the wet concrete, the kid’s legs flailing as he tries to breathe."

Yeah i totally remember that one, it has a scene where Davey (with evil pointy eyebrows) smashes the kid's face into the wet cement. It was pretty hardcore and one that I totally wanted to see again.

Wow! That seems incredibly violent for ANY kids' programming let alone one produced by a church organization.

It's like Davey turned into a different kid when Norma MacMillan started voicing him.

The "bad" Davey's had the newer jazzy intro and he always wore the same picnic tablecloth plaid shirt.

Wow, I had no idea they did something like this. I watched a little Davey and Goliath, but I always could tell it was..."churchy". I went to church and youth group as a kid, but I think those Spire Comics that fooled me into thinking they were "straight" Archie books made me weary of religious programming for kids.

I always thought Davey and Goliath did a pretty good job keeping religion ambiguous.

Besides the specials, they never mentioned Jesus or any particular religion

Everything was "god" wants you to do this or that.

You literally could dub "The Force" over god and not change the show

I doubt I ever watched the 1970's reboot. Probably why I don't remember that episode.

Are you sure that isn't a still frame from an episode of Baretta?

I had no idea there were two iterations of Davey and Goliath.

                            Me either, until now.

                            1970s episodes

The LCA and Clokey Productions began funding another series of episodes in 1969, to begin airing in 1971. At this point, only Norma MacMillan and Hal Smith did voices. In these episodes, Davey was junior high-school aged, and occasionally became very rebellious. His antics included pouring paint in a water well, hanging from a dinosaur's head in a museum, accusing a handicapped child of being "dumb" and cheating on tests in school. This Davey had a totally different personality from the Davey portrayed in the 1960s. Norma MacMillan continued to do the voice of Davey.

I remember all of those, I guess I didn't notice the shift in tone as a kid.

The religious tone never had me bat an eye as a kid, I was somewhat used to it being in Catholic school but mostly because they still tried to be entertaining.
