    Toy-Ventures: ERTL Star Trek 3

We're back after a short break and going to take a look at a 1980s property for a change.

This week is all about the rarely talked about ERTL Star Trek 3 line, one of the most obscure toy lines of the 1980s. We delve into the back story of Star Trek movie toys, how these got made and why they didn't really succeed.

Nice video about this line. I have them MOC as well, though you see far more of these on the card than loose. That's probably because more of them went to collectors than kids. Odd that they went with Scotty over McCoy, but I suppose they thought they'd include him in wave 2, which never happened.

I wonder if they even planned ahead like that. You're right about never finding them loose.

I had the 4 figures. they were really cheap and broke easily, which is probably why you don't find them loose. I actually sold off my loose set from my childhood about 15 years ago. I think we had found them at, of all placed, the air and space museum in Washington DC in the mid eighties

This will not be a likely answer from most, but I wish there had been Star Trek VI figures. Years ago, I joked I would collect "figures from actors in the RSC" (at that time, that was mostly a few Star Wars figures and a few here or there, long before Harry Potter & LOTR filled toy aisles, not to mention Patrick Stewart for both ST:TNG & X-Men). I said at that time, I'd be able to get good Christopher Plummer & David Warner Klingons, only to realize/remember that film didn't get the toy treatment. Since that ended up being the last true film for the classic crew, I wish it had been licensed.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

Great video. Had I known these existed in 1984, I would have been all over them. Oddly enough, I found the Ertl die-cast Excelsior and Klingon Bird of Prey from this line at Kings Island amusement park near Cincinnati, OH. This was several years before Paramount bought Kings Island, so I have no idea why they were there!
