    70's Novelty Songs

Do you remember the novelty songs that actually charted in the 70's. I had a vague flashback the other day of a faux reporter interviewing people on beach in a Jaws parody. A short google search later led me to a song that reached #4 in 1975, "Mr Jaws" by Dickie Goodman

Another I remember in this sampling style was John & Ernest's "Superfly Meets Shaft"

We even had a local hit in Philly by Broad Street Bully Dave Schultz
David William "The Hammer" Schultz was known as a point producer in junior hockey, but became an 'enforcer' in his first year of pro hockey with Salem of the...

Do you remember hearing any of these outside of the Dr Dememto show?

I remember my friend had one of those K-Tel compilations at his cottage and we played it on rainy days. It had Guitarzan and Snoopy Vs the Red Baron on it and I just missed it by a second at a record sale last month.

As kids we had Mr. Jaws as a 45 for some odd reason.

My mum's radio station (CKFM!) would dust off the "Monster Mash" every Halloween but that was about it.

I'm not sure, but I really love Dr.Demento! I started listening in 1976, and have tons of shows recorded.

Dr. Demento aired on Sunday nights when I was 12 or 13, followed by "the sunday funnies" and "Theatre of the mind", programs i didn't miss because i was the perfect age. I think it was replaced by "Sex with Sue" when I turned 14 or maybe I just had more interest in that subject matter.

^^ Same for me. Sunday nights. I think it was on KLOS in Los Angeles. Great way to end the weekend and start the week for school.

Oh yeah, I'd doze off during "The Shadow" most of the time but i loved all of it.

As far as played on the regular radio and Dr. Demento, "Boris the Spider".

Absolutely. It does seem that hit novelty songs have lessened since the 80's. I remember when you'd hear songs like Pac Man Fever or Disco Duck or The Streak on American Top 40. Maybe the nature of the music industry makes it a harder for these songs to gain a mass audience like they used to. I think Weird Al was probably the height of novelty success.

A bit, yes. Your posts sparked a very vague memory of a bunch songs on the radio when I was kid. They were told like a story, sampling popular songs to fill in the narrative. A snippet from one stuck out in the fog where a reporter interviewed beach-goers about a shark. I then heard a reference to them on a podcast that further stoked the memory. A quick search later led me to "Mr Jaws."
