Ebay sellers out of state charging tax??

Just won an auction and went to checkout to pay for the auction and literally didn't realize until I hit the button to pay for the auction that the seller charged me tax. The seller doesn't live in New York. The seller lives in Colorado. Is it legal to charge outside of state a tax on Ebay sales? I thought if you sold to people within the state you charged tax. Is there something I missed?? Has ebay changed it's policy and never informed it's users? Is this a consequence of the new tax laws? Any help is appreciated.

When a buyer purchases an item on eBay, and the ship to address is one of the above states, eBay will calculate and add the applicable sales tax at checkout. The buyer will pay both the cost of the item along with the sales tax. eBay will collect and remit the tax.

New York is one of the states in the table, effective June 1

Short answer. Yes. I've been paying taxes for out of state purchased items, including auctions, since the beginning of the year.

    Why? Here you go

The worst is living outside the US, ebay calculate and charge U when U proceed to pay. Before U could ask the seller to send as gift etc.

There's a shock. New Jersey is among the first to start grabbing tax.
