Producer Buys Atlas Comics Library, Teams With Paramount on Series of Movies

I collect Atlas comics, I can't believe this is a thing.

'Ghost Rider' producer Steven Paul has acquired a majority stake in the Atlas Comics library and signed a co-production and co-financing first-look deal with Paramount Pictures to develop, produce and distribute superhero films based on the comic books.

I find this a bit surprising too, as Arrden had acquired the rights to the Atlas stuff and tried a revival circa 2010/2011 with the hopes of using the comics to attract Hollywood attention and options and found zero takers. The comics they produced varied in quality too, with some comic veteran attached to some titles.

Arrden tried like hell to pitch these to Hollywood and no one wanted them. I guess 8 years and a slew of successful comic based movies has made a difference in interest, or PT Barnum was right and there's a sucker born every minute and someone was grasping at straws for a piece of the action.

I love the 70s Atlas/Seaboard stuff too, but I don't see it grabbing audiences of today.

Yeah I assume Endgame's box office will attract investment in almost any property and the fact that this is some weird cousin to Marvel Comics doesn't hurt.

Sounds like someone smelled something that kinda smelled like Marvel (has the name Marvel once used, published by it's founder, edited and partially created Stan's brother Larry Lieber) and just dropped a ton of money for something they could have made up themselves.

It seems really odd to purchase such an obscure and limited library like this. Especially when many of them are pretty derivative of Marvel. Why not just create your own characters?

Paramount also had that initial distribution deal with Marvel. The Disney purchase screwed them out of a ton of money.

I only know these comics from articles I've read about them. I hope the films turn out well, and I'm glad for the fans of the properties, but this is pretty baffling.

I was aware of Atlas as a kid, but I have to admit I was bit snobby towards them.

This move reminds of the years following the release of Star Wars when everybody was greenlighting everything that happened in space. Heck, even the Super Friends saw lightsabers (or some kind of fire swords) infiltrate the show. Remember, though- this is the "golden age of content." It may not actually be filled with gold, but with so many outlets for movies and shows, everyone is looking for the next possible hit. Given Steven Paul's history, I'm worried we might get a Star Crash rather a Battlestar Galactica.
          WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

I only found Atlas after the fact and was completely fascinated by their horror angle.

As for the movies, I have no expectations.

Paramount is in freefall. I'd bet highly against this happening. Maybe as a CBS All-Access show, but Par is not going to through 150Mil+ behind this fodder.

I remember Atlas at the time and bought most of them years later. I can't see the characters being used in big budget movies.

Going back same of the back issues the listings there could be pulled together to make supernatural cinematic universe:

Just spitballing an idea but all these titles could be connected by Planet of Vampires. The draw from POA in that 6 astronaunts return to Earth but something happened and the supernatural have taken over leaving the human scrambling to service.

With some minor rewriting of the characters (that most people will not know) they could develop there own JLD before DC Comics does. May even turn out alright,

Ah, the comic adaptations that no one was asking for. I guess Paramount needs a back up for when the Hasbroverse films tank. Oh Paramount....
