Classic would probably be Macbeth, Hamlet, Jane Eyre, or Mony Dick. More modern would be Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird or my absolute favorite, Breakfast of Champions.

The most classic things I’ve read of my own volition (i.e. not mandated in school), would have to be Of Mice and Men ( the opening paragraphs read like sweet syrup pouring from the bottle. Perfection.), Lord of the Flies, and the Tolkien stuff. Being a Dungeons and Dragons fan, I was always more into the Appendix N books, Jack Vance especially.

                I know... I’m a Neanderthal...

I would need to know the generally accepted date cutoff for a novel to be considered "classic" before I could make a firm decision.

It appears classic has little to do with date based on the responses. Novel is also quite...fluid.

If more modern stuff........Asimov, Tolkien, Anthony, Brooks, Donaldson, McCaffrey etc.

Depends on how you define classic. I'll go with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If that's not covered,The Odyssey.

The Count of Monte Cristo, going by most definitions of "classic."

Otherwise, A Princess of Mars is my favorite book of all time.

I honestly had trouble with the parameters as well. I've read that book to my son a bazillion times too and we both love it. It has everything! Plus holes puched through it!
