      Dracula
      Frankenstein
      Phantom of the Opera
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

My favorite classic is The Tempest by SHakespeare. I know that it's not a "novel" but I love it nvertheless.

ANother is Heart of Darkness by Conrad.

Recent classics: I love Stuart Little, The Cricket in Times Square and of course the novelization of Star Wars.
If I had only spent a tenth of the time studying Physics that I spent learning Star Wars and Baseball trivia, I would have won the Nobel Prize.

I'd have to go with Dracula. I really don't think any film has done it justice, although I love many for their own reasons. Francis Ford Coopala's comes close, but then ruins its authenticity with all that reincarnated romance crud that doesn't belong.

Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitgerald

that is if Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit don't count as classic novels, if they do, then it would be that.

If it doesn't have to be "novel" (as folks have mentioned Shakespeare), it would be the epic poem Beowulf (with the Illiad and the Odyssey close behind) or Le Morte d'Artur by Sir Thomas Mallory.

Count of Monte Cristo, no film does it justice and I don't expect it ever will.

It's not my favorite, but I just finished H.G. Wells "The Invisible Man." I went into it thinking it was going to be a bit boring, but I've had the same copy of the book my entire life, so maybe it was time to read it. I really enjoyed it.

"The Red Badge of Courage" (Stephen Crane) comes to mind as a favorite classic book, as does "A Tale of Two Cities." (Dickens).

Oh and I don't suppose "The Stand" counts as a classic novel? Probably not...

To Kill A Mockingbird - a great novel AND a great film. That's rare.

The first ones that come to mind are Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies if those aren't too modern. I liked Great Expections a great deal when it was assigned reading in junior high.

Treasure Island is my favorite. I've probably read it 6 times.

After that, 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea and a Journey To The Center of the Earth.
