I watched this for the first time last night, and concur that it's....odd. Not bad, but just strange. Karloff is wasted, but in his few scenes, he exudes menace and power. When he's fighting off 3 men trying to hold him down, I believe it. Thesinger is great, and actually quite funny. I love how he just comes down the day after all the chaos and near death and says "Good morning".

I enjoyed watching it again. It's very stagy and theatrical--for which admittedly I have a great tolerance. But it's the performances and dialogue that carry it, not the plot. A great cast--I will watch Theisinger in anything. I wouldn't say it's full-on camp, but it has some sly humor that I like.
