The movie Venom is not what the trailers depict

The trailers shows a dark and brooding movie...but in reality, it’s a weird comedy, along the lines of Deadpool...

You'd think they'd market it like that.

I don't think i've ever read a comic with Venom in it.

Venom came up when I had stopped reading comics. I grew to know him through other media (Spider-Man 3, toys, models, internet, etc)...

...just like Deadpool, as I never read him in comic books either, but grew to like him regardless...

He's a video game character to me mainly.

So, you saw it Hector? All the marketing made it look like a lite horror film.

I liked Venom when he first showed up in ASM #300 (I still own my original copy!). But they oversaturated the market with him EVERYWHERE, especially when he got endless mini-series. And he got all ridiculously toothy and tonguey. Hard to imagine, but McFarlane's original version was very restrained.

Nope, not seen it, but all the ones who did, and who are writing about it, are saying it’s a pretty funny (and weird) flick.

With all apologies to his fans, I can't help but associate Venom with the low point in 90s comics. Exaggerated anatomy, sketchy lifework, variant covers. It was the end of comics for me. But the mixed reviews really make me want to see this for myself. It could be so staggeringly bad as to have all the makings of a cult classic.

Will I see it at the theaters? Nope.

I rarely go to the movie theater these days...the last one was Infinity Wars.

But all the big ones, Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok, Deadpool 2, Solo, etc...all rentals.

I’ll check out Venom when it hits Redbox...

Keep in mind, this thing has been in the works for almost 20 years. Arad has been pushing Venom from the earliest days because he was one of the things that sold strong for Toy Biz/Marvel and was really popular on the cartoon.

Sony had to do this at some point, just to get the development money off their accounting sheets. Usually, when you see this "clear the books" approach, it means something bigger is happening. Sony has been in merger talks for years. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a precursor. That would flip the rights back...

Hopefully not with disgusting humour like Deadpool so my kids can enjoy it too.

I'm hearing it's not doing so good on Rotten Tomatoes. Though that's according to some YouTube videos,so you know how those can be.

I heard it was along the lines of old Sam Raimi Horror movies. It has a PG-13 rating aimed for families.

Yeah, I was all for Secret Wars Spidey, but once the Symbiote went all beefcake and toothsome I was out.

Generally speaking, if I'm even remotely curious about an upcoming film I won't read a word about it or even look up pics until I've actually seen it. Venom, on the other hand, doesn't really appeal to me at all, so I spent some time today poking around some articles. Funny you should mention potential cult classic, as I ran into this most unexpected take over on BirthMoviesDeath:

Never would I have guesses that this unintended facet is what might keep people coming back for generation to come!
