I was so excited the first time I saw this, but from what I understand they're not really creating these images they're trained to re-create patterns with the paints. The elephants are very bright and have amazing sensitivity in their trunks to be able to do this, but essentially (and unfortunately) the processs to get them to do this seems pretty cruel. From what I've seen there's even things like pins hidden behind the elephant's ears that trainers pinch if they're doing something wrong. I hate to be a downer, but that's from what I've learned about this.
From what I understand there really are cave paintings from early hominids, so I think we have confirmed that there were some non-humans who created art, maybe one day we'll see that again in a living species!Comment

while I don't doubt that they were trained to do this, elephants are highly intelligent animals. we are only beginning to understand how smart they areComment
