    Uhura & Chapel

With the sad news about Nichelle Nichols' diagnosis, I thought I would pay my respects by sharing these female Trek customs that I never got around to posting. I normally love Mego's classic rooted hair, but let's face it... the Mego Uhura is not a very good likeness.

These are pretty straightforward. The heads are shrinks of the Playmates figures. Chapel's uniform sewn by me.

I really like these, and such good sculpts.

It occurs to me that with these type of heads, the new Mego neck might be advantageous.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I really like these very much, did you shrink the heads yourself?

any plans on giving Nurse Chapel pants or keep as is?

Thanks for the nice comments. Sorry I missed these questions...

I shrunk the heads myself using naphtha. I don't have a copy... but these figures are easy to find cheap and it is a snap to do the shrink. I am already planning to shrink another Chapel to make a Cage Era Number One. These Playmates figures are fun to shrink.

No plans to give Chapel leggings. I tried doing leggings a couple different ways... and ultimately, I thought the bare legs still looked better.

Can I assume naptha doesn't strip the paint? Or are you that skilled of a hand at painting?

Doesn't strip the paint and doesn't cause rooted hair to fall out... it is the "bomb diggity" (as the cool kids say).

It is a paint thinner. It comes in big metal cans at the hardware store.

I fill a jelly jar 2/3 full with the stuff. Then I thread some picture framing wire in the head hole (so I can keep the head submerged) and lower it in until it is completed submerged. Then seal the jar, and let it sit for a day or two. There is no expansion like you see with acetone, and it doesn't seem like you can leave it in too long... so it really doesn't require babysitting while its in the jar.

I find it helps to apply a little heat and pressure (i.e. squeeze it down a little more with my hands) once I pull it from the jar, just to get it as tightly compacted as possible. On some heads, this can lead to a little flattening of the top of head if you are not careful... but even when I have done that, I don't think it noticeable once you put the figure together.

For male heads, the last part I did was 3d print a little neck adapter to give it a Mego compatible plug... but now I bet you could just use a new Mego body. For the ladies, the neck plugs are mostly compatible... but you may need to widen the hole slightly so it can fit on.

                              I really, really like these.
I'm hoping future waves of Star Trek will include Chapel while producing updated heads of established characters.
There's nothing wrong with the vintage heads, but I'd prefer seeing the Star Trek line get new head sculpts.
That was super smart shrinking the heads.
