I liked 1941 when I saw it in the theatre. It was goofy so it hit 10-year-old me in all the right spots. I remember discovering years later that it was ripped apart by critics and didn't do well at the box office. I watched it a couple years ago and still enjoyed it!
There are some really great bits and gags in the film. I liken it to a Mad Magazine parody. I wonder had it been called "National Lampoon's 1941", if it wouldn't have found a bigger audience. I'll admit that some of the laffs don't stick the landing, but it is beautifully photographed, has an amazing cast, incredible special effects that still hold up, a rollicking John Williams score, and a go-for-broke spirit that is just plain bonkers, even if the whole isn't greater than the sum of its parts.
Yeah, I like 1941.
This model kit needs a tiny Wild Bill Kelso in the cockpit.
