^ they had disappeared by 1999. Some say predation got to the little ones and Gigi may have succumbed to rinderpest before its eradication.

RIP Toys R Us. The smell of a TRU store was instantly recognizable for so many years and it's something I'll never forget.

Hard to believe we're quickly losing so many things in such a short span of time which are dear to our hearts. The toy departments at Walmart and Target don't stock all of the more adult-oriented action/sci fi/horror items which were readily available at TRU and the Walgreens toy department is underwhelming and creepy for adults and kids alike.

Canada is becoming to TRU what Japan is to Tower Records. You guys can come here anytime and visit Geoffrey.

I saw that image yesterday and it made me very melancholy. I bagged on TRU a lot in the last decade or so because they never seemed to keep anything good in stock, and wouldn't clear out pegwarmers, but the death of the dedicated toy store in the US is really sad.

My kids always enjoyed going into TRU just to look around, and I'm glad they got to do that in their formative childhood years.

Since I can't be a "Toys 'R' Us" kid anymore, does that mean I have to grow up now?

I'm genuinely relieved and happy TRU continues on in Canada.

But it still feels like a gut punch that it closes here today. It's a big cultural loss and was the last toy chain in the States. I also had always hoped I would have had a chance to go back to the TRU stores I went to as a kid.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

That’s excellent! I saw the story on the local NYC news.
