Yeah, a lot of Jim concepts found their way into MOTU. Mattel was good at that.
I think that Man-E-Faces had a much more stripped down concept because the Zorak face change gimmick was the work of an outside toy designer.

This whole discussion, though, confuses me. My gut feeling is that these variances are due to paint apps and production runs. Nearly every Zorak I check on ebay a few days ago had a uniform green face. On one lacking a cowl, you could see that the upper forehead hadn't been fully sprayed green.

Funny, cuz as I mentioned, all the ones I saw had the gradation. And it's almost always drawn that way on the box art. Now it may have been born out of necessity, or just a happy coinkydink. Gonna throw up the Plaidstallions box image for reference. Without speaking to someone from Mattel I think it's all speculation on the hows and whys, but it's kinda cool that it makes for so many variants.
