Hip Hop music in Black Panther

Why must every black character be associated with this type of music?
I'm very much looking forward to the film, but the music so far seems very out of place. That type of American Hip Hop associated with gang culture doesn't belong in a film about a Wakandan King, IMO.

I would have much preferred a more African themed tribal score...something majestic, befitting of a great ruler and warrior.

    Thoughts?

This has been discussed previously but i only heard a synth score with some samples of "Gil Scot Heron" ( a poet, not a rapper by any means) in the trailer, it didn't sound necessarily like hip-hop to me.

I hated the rock music in Thor Ragnarok. It should’ve been some type of Nordic folk music.

But seriously...while not a fan of hip hop...it has its place. Lots of people like it, including white kids. It’s highly popular. It’s catering to the young masses. And while the trailer features hip hop...it’s NOT gangsta hip hop, it doesn’t feature the type of lyrics that warrants that. Hip hop modernizes it, makes it cool. I’m sure the actual film will feature the traditional classical musical score, you can get the bank on it. Hey, Jimmy Page collaborated with P Diddy, so if he did, I can as well by going along for the ride. I’m watching it. I’m willing to bet my life is going to be a QUADRILLION times better than that sorry arze Iron Man 3. I’m in.

By the way, I love Led Zeppelin. I was just making a point. We can’t have it one way. We are all in...or all out...

^I'm being serious Hector. I didn't care for the rock music in Thor either. It doesn't fit the character.

The Black Panther is an African King, not some ghetto vigilante. He deserves an epic score reflective of his status and culture, not THIS.

Why put the words "ghetto" on hip-hop? it's a widely appreciated style of music, perhaps the most popular in the world right now.

I don't like all of it but I do respect, appreciate and enjoy some of it.

They're marketing an action movie and it's not as established as some of the other marvel properties, so they're using popular music to tell the public that's an exciting sci-fi/action film.

I like some of it too...mostly older stuff, but that's just because it's what I grew up with. Run DMC, MC Hammer...YES, I still like the Hammer. And the word ghetto refers to the place...Daredevil is a ghetto vigilante.

Oh yeah me too but you're kind of answering the question as to why to use this. They're trying to get young people to see this movie and they like hip-hop. I hear that music and think it'll be fast paced.

I'm not sure why they would need to do that...they didn't with any of the other Marvel movies, and plenty of young people went to see them.
Even crusty old Captain America set in the 1940's.

I just hate how whenever there's a black superhero it's the automatic go-to style of music. To me it just feeds the stereotypes people often complain about. And I think in this case it's just wrong for the character. I'd feel the same way if it had a Waylon Jennings soundtrack. LOL

The last Black Superhero project I can think of was Luke Cage, which had amazing R & B music. Yeah they used ODB for the trailer (and it was awesome) but that show had real provenance.

What other Superhero projects have their been with a black lead? Catwoman? Steel? Their biggest problems weren't the soundtrack.

You might hate it, but most black people and lots of white kids will not hate it..
