I've always used it as a separate playset.

I'd also give an honorable mention to the 2002 Castle Grayskull playset. It was kind of flat and the sculpt wasn't as nice but the ability it had to scan and detect the figures was pretty cool.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

      Very cool.

I enjoy all the Castle Grayskull talk. It had many good features.

At the mention of Robotech, not a playset, but I also like the Matchbox Veritech Fighter. It would have been even more amazing if it would have been able to transform into the two other modes. I sold mine on eBay a few years ago, sometime after 2004, I forget exactly when since I sold a few toys over the years, but I still have Snake Mountain and Castle Grayskull, even though I left them outside too long, they are still pretty much in good shape though, the stuff that I sold were mostly near mint items.

I think my first actual playset would have been the Death Star.
Unless you count that giant Space 1999 Eagle One as a playset. That, was the bomb.

I was too old for toys by the time MOTU came out. I would have loved that Castle Greyskull.
I think the last ones I actually had were the Droid Factory, and the Imperial Attack Base

When I was young, I remember various fold-up sets with things like forts and such. Basically a box that unfolded and inside were cowboy and indians. But they never lasted long. Too flimsy, and I was too young to actually take care of them.

The Star Wars Death Star would be my favorite, with the 8" Mego Star Trek bridge a close second.

This is a tough question, I had the Sears exclusive Adventure Team Training center which included a 7 foot x 7 foot vinyl play mat. The mat had a place for the AT headquarters and the tower and also one corner was a helipad. I got a lot of play hours out of this set combined with the AT HQ.

The Mego Batcave will always hold a special place in my heart too. Sure it was a simple design, but who didn't have a blast racing the Batmobile through the opened entrance of the cave. Or having Batman and robin slide down the pole.

The Kenner Death Star playset for Star Wars was awesome as well. In that one 3 foot hunk of plastic was an play feature that mimic just about every major scene from the film. You had the tractor beam, the trash compactor, a turbo Laser the rope swing over the chasm a floor that resembled the prison control area, it was a great piece of toy engineering.

I haven't seen anyone mention them here , but I've also got to give some love to the Micronauts. The Astro Station was a particular favorite, part playset, part vehicle, with spring loaded dart launchers, a "time chamber" enough seats for four figures, it packed alot of value into a small space. All of this just goes to show the mid to late 70's were truly a golden age for toys.

Hands down has to be the Kenner Death Star.

There was a brief time in my 'play' career where I would have liked nothing better than for the fisher price castle to be scale for Star Wars figures.
