2018 will be the year of the "Big Heads"

Nearly 20 years ago, when I first got heavily into model building...I had a dream

There was a magazine called Amazing Figure Modeler (which is still going) that showcased some of the most unbelievable model kits I had ever seen.
One of these was a series from Earthbound Studios called the "Big Head" series. 3/4 scale busts of classic horror/sci-fi characters with incredibly elaborate bases incorporating elements of each film,
all topped off with beautifully sculpted nameplates recreating the actual lettering from the original movie posters.

But, they were expensive. There was just no way I could afford them, so I was forced to watch in agony as each new release came out. I contented myself with cheap and readily available plastic kits, which are great also,
but those busts always haunted me. They were beyond anything I'd ever seen. True works of sculptural art. Fast forward to this year...the line is currently at 25 busts with more coming.
Then, a miracle happened. I came across one of the long sold out busts on Ebay...I hesitated for a few days, and eventually gave in and bought it. Once I had it in hand, the spark was re-ignited. After 20 years I could now afford them,
and decided I was going to have them all. So the hunt began. Through Ebay, modeling forums, Facebook and shows I am now up to 14...several more are still available from the producer,
and I should be current with the series in a few more months.

Painting these will be the greatest thing I've ever worked on. Due to the size and number of these busts, they will probably replace most of my other models and become the centerpiece of my collecting.
I started photographing the unpainted busts so you can see how great they are even without paint. The best sculptors in the hobby have all contributed to making this the best, longest running series ever produced.
The castings are flawless and the busts require almost zero prep work, allowing you more time to paint. It will take me several years to complete them all, but I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with my friends here!

Did you know Jeff Yagher is the actor? The guy from V, Tales from the Crypt, and Star Trek

            Guy is amazingly talented.

Oh yeah, he's Kyle from "V" and I've known about his mad garage kit skills since the early 90s. I may have actually met the dude, not sure anymore.

I was at Chiller when the "Barker Brothers" were hawking freak show kits, they later changed their name to "Sideshow".

I saw an interview with him once where they toured his home and showed off his entire collection of kits he sculpted.

It was a drool worthy monster museum that even Forrest J. Ackerman would envy.

Those are amazing! I was looking up Jeff Yagher to see if I could find the tour of his home, and he is the Jazz Musician from that Seinfeld episode. His younger brother Kevin Yagher is a special effects technician. Very cool.

Thought this was going to be a Figures Toy Company post. Can't wait to see the Saucer Man.

Man, those are gorgeous. I would love the Saucer Man and Metaluna Mutant but I wouldn't be able to do them justice painting-wise.

                              Those are all great, awesome.

I know you prefer traditional brush painting. I’m more into airbrush.

But I have not airbrushed in a looooooong time...but will be getting back to it. I too have a few things to paint...including a Blackheart 1:1 Alien Warrior Wall Head.
