Home Video: Upcoming Blu-Rays and DVDs

I like to keep my finger on the pulse of genre related home video releases, so I thought it might be helpful to start a thread we could curate and contribute to, whenever new or upcoming releases are announced, or if there's a really good sale or deal out there.

I likely wouldn't include home video releases of modern films like ALIEN Covenenant or the latest Marvel Movie here. I think it would be more appropriate, given the style of the Museum and Plaid Stallions, to include niche or genre related releases that might otherwise slip past the radar.

I will also share some foreign releases for those who have region-free players. (And if you don't, what are you waiting for?! )

    Helpful Links:

Region Free Blu-Ray Players: These are really inexpensive, and I can personally vouch for them. They do work, allowing you to play a Blu Ray or DVD from anywhere in the world. Then you can shop on Amazon.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.it, etc, etc.

    http://www.220-electronics.com/

Blu-Ray.com: This is an invaluable resource. I highly recommend the app for your phone. You can scan each barcode and catalog your collection. The posters on the message board can be pretty picky, which can sometimes take the fun out of a release, but you'll find more information than you need there.

And in case you're wondering, here is my own personal collection.

I'll let you know when I get it! It looks pretty trashy, that's for sure.

Dwayne, you can get both Teen Wolf movies on sale at Best Buy for $13.99 each right now. And I've been eyeing that Captain Marvel set also. I've never seen it, but it's supposed to be one of the best serials out there.

I was going to post about this. One of the guys at Severin is a listener of my show and bestowed us with goodies recently. I noticed this on their website and yeah, it's a must have for me.

Great thread! Hedji, I noticed you had Screen Archives Entertainment linked, but I wanted to give a special shout out to their Twilight Time subsidiary. Here's their main page:

                      https://www.twilighttimemovies.com/

For those not familiar with them, they do limited run (3000 copies only) blu-ray releases of licensed titles, often ones that have never been on blu-ray or are currently out of print or forgotten. I was late finding out about them, which caused me to miss a couple releases I really wanted (Rollerball and Enemy Mine). Luckily, they did a second run of Rollerball, so I was able to pick that up for regular price...but they've since said they're not going to be doing reissues anymore. I have yet to get Enemy Mine. Once their titles go out of print, the price unsurprisingly skyrockets on the secondary market. I've also picked up Mississippi Burning and 1984 from them directly.

Companies like this doing limited runs could be the future of physical media. These guys and Criterion are on the high end of that model.

Thanks SKot! I added that link to the first post. Forgot about Twilight Time. I have their Fright Night disc

SKot is right about their prices skyrocketing once they go out of print. It's one more reason to invest in a Region Free player, or just be on the lookout for Region Free releases from other countries. Twilight Time did the 1990 Night of the Living Dead, but sadly the color timing was very dark and very blue. It got very expensive after selling out, but then Australian label Umbrella released a better looking version, that could be imported for under $20, and it is region-free. You can get foreign versions of both Enemy Mine and Rollerball. Here's an example: Enemy Mine for only $16! The catch is, that one may be Region B coded, and not play on regular North American players.

Another example: The first Vincent Price Box Set from Scream Factory went out of print, and now you cant touch it for less than $200! But I ordered all the individual titles from the UK label Arrow for probably less than what the box set cost at retail. The downside is, I can't share the discs with people who don't have region-free players. (or is that a good thing? )

Good question, Ian. The good news with Mill Creek, is they are inexpensive. The bad news is, they're not known for their quality. Here is what they currently offer for Television: http://www.millcreekent.com/products...nre_primary=76. I typically don't buy a lot of TV shows other than my top handful of favorites, so I'm not quite so on the pulse there. I do know that Kino Lorber is going to be releasing the Complete Outer Limits to Blu Ray, which should be pretty nifty. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=21466
