The Incredible Mystery Hulk from Asia!

We love a good mystery at the MegoMuseum and our new friend Rainman reached out to us via our sister site PlaidStallions.com with this handsome fellow. He writes: “Hi I have had this strange vinyl Hulk figure for years and haven’t had any luck in identifying the manufacturer. The person I got from in the…

That is really cool! I've collected a lot of Japanese toys but have never seen that logo in my life. I personally don't think it's from Japan, I'm pretty sure that the Hulk did not have any sort of pop culture presence in Japan in the 70's (I've never seen any sort of 70's Japanese Hulk toy, the only superhero merchandise from that era was based on Superman, Batman and Spider-man). It's most likely a boot, but from where I have no idea, fascinating!

Yeah, that's the one thing that has me doubting Japan is that the big guy never seemed to be real popular there.

You think he would be though?

Oh yeah, I'm sure he would be, it's just that US superhero comics were not really popular at all in Japan, so most of our superheroes were unknown there (which is sure not the case now!) and I'm pretty sure they didn't get the Hulk TV show either. For example, my wife had no idea who Hulk was until she moved here and I told her about him.

Wow, that's really neat. I like the way the face paint looks on the thin plastic!

I wouldn't assume it was sold as a Hulk figure.

It reminds me of the '78 Godzilla Gang figures - Ultraman monsters polybagged as a Godzi line for the States. J-Hulk could have been a villain for another line.

It could very well be that this isn't from Asia at all. The owner says the guy who sold it to him "thinks it's from Japan", I wonder what he was basing that on? There is nothing inherently Japanese about the symbols on the bottom of his feet, they could be from anywhere. Don't get me wrong, this is a wonderful piece, I just have doubts that it's a toy that was sold in Japan.

Always nice to see these mego and mego like items/figures from other countries, the 70's Japanese toys were great.

The owner lives in the Phillipines, that's more or less where I assumed Asia but like you, thought Japan seemed less likely than say Thailand.

I honestly could see this being from Spain, where Hulk was popular and their seemed to be some in country manufacture with the Mego molds.

It's funny, actually I could see this possibly being from the Philippines, they had more exposure to US comics than the rest of Asia back in the day. And like you say, I could see Spain too. I love foreign mystery toys like this!

I'm just guessing, but the face to me has a very 70s anime/manga look to it. Also there were Spider-Man and Hulk mangas in the 70s.

                          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulk:_The_Manga

                          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man:_The_Manga

Also, this Hulk looks like it could be a companion piece to the Popy Spider-Man.
