Is anybody excited for the eclipse on Monday?

I"m hoping we don't have cloudy skies. It seems like it's always cloudy when something astronomical happens. I live a little over an hour from totality, so I plan on going somewhere to watch.

I'm excited, but I'm keeping it in check - I feel a bit like Charlie Brown and Lucy with the ball - every time something cool happens it seems cloudy that day.

I've got the glasses. I really want to see it. Last time we had a total eclipse here, I was in the sixth grade I think. They wouldn't let us out of school on recess so nobody got to see it. They kept the curtains closed all day.

We are near the belt of totality. I think it is something like 98% where I live, but we are heading north a bit to hang out with some friends and make some pinhole cameras to watch with.

Man that's lame! I guess they were afraid you guys would damage your eyes?

I did a quick google and found this info on NASA's site:

The last total solar eclipse viewed from contiguous United States was on Feb. 26, 1979 whose path passed through the northwestern U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

I just heard that the eclipse has been canceled due to low ticket sales.

Ha, yes I remember the same when I was in school.

And that must have been the one for me. For this one, I think my area will have 72% coverage.

Anyone buying glasses, just be careful, I've heard there are some cheap knockoffs floating around out there that might not offer full eye protection.

They closed the drapes but let us watch it on tv back in '79. I was in the 3rd grade.

People are going bat-**** crazy here in WA. I flew into Spokane today and every rental car agency was pretty much out - people are heading to Idaho and Oregon. They are issuing traffic warnings already today for Seattle to OR travel - including small towns on the way are already out of gas. Every single store is sold out of glasses. People are scalping them.

Honestly, I don't get it. But some are apparently using this as their family road trip.

This is a once in a lifetime event. I think the last eclipse like this one was in 1776.
