    Curse of the Undead

Anyone ever seen this one? It was on Svengoolie last night. A strange western/vampire hybrid that was totally serious and actually worked. I had never even heard of it before. It's totally ignored in every Universal Horror book or article I've read. A surprisingly good story that harkens back to actual Europen vampire folklore more than Bram Stoker and previous Universal films. It has some familiar faces too, like Eric Flemming from Rawhide and John Hoyt, Dr. Boyce from Star Trek's "The Cage", playing a doctor here too. Michael Pate plays the vampire gunslinger and comes across as a dark complexioned James Coburn, which isn't a bad thing.

As often the case, the poster is a bit misleading. The vampire doesn't wear a cape.

For some reason, it's out on YouTube and Daily Motion right now:

I saw it for the first time when first-run on Sven and agree with you. I enjoyed watching it again. I'm not sure why it's not mentioned with Leech Woman and Monster on Campus, particularly when it's superior to both IMO. One of those overlooked minor diamonds in the rough I guess. I think it blends the two genres--horror and Western--well and as you say, has a great cast. Lots of classic Uni stock music in it, too.

Australian Michael Pate as vampire gunslinger Drago Robles is good and menacing for a man of smaller stature. He was also Clock King's henchman lieutenant on Batman '66.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

^That's right! I knew I recognized him from somewhere!

Yeah, it really surprises me that this movie is completely overlooked in Michael Mallory's Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror. Maybe because it's a gothic horror throwback amidst all the sci-fi monsters of the 50s, and just didn't fit the flow of the book?

I really liked this movie too. Sven's showed it a couple times.
Solid acting from everyone in it. It comes off with a bit of a tv western flavor, but that is a good thing. No surprise either, it's cast with all tv players.
The ending gunfight is satisfying too, way better than the usual "staking".

Yes exactly, and they do an effective job with the economical effects.

Yeah, it looks like an episode of Rawhide or the Rifleman, except for the few moody shots where the vampire puts his bite on the female lead. But I think that kind of works for it, like this outside invader has entered into a foreign world.
