    National Lampoon is sold

Looks like the new owners want to bring it back big time.

Didn't National Lampoon own Heavy Metal magazine or am I mixing facts and misremembering?

Yep, they already had some success with European comics and ended up creating a US version of France's Metal Hurlant. There is a lot more to the situation that I now forget, but I think that's basically it. If you look at the credits of the old HM mags, it says they are a subsidiary of National Lampoon and there were tons of Nat Lamp ads in HM (I was just reading an old issue the other day that had a full page ad for Vacation on the inside front cover).

It's an uphill battle, but despite the name's awful rep over the last 20 years, I think enough people remember the name fondly that it could work, but only if the content is actually good.

Sounds like it could be cool. Seems like the right time to do it too. Pop culture seems generally more hungry for sharp satire right now. MAD seems to be making a bit of a comeback as well.

Over the past 15 years, three devotees of the comedy institution have attempted to restore the humor brand to its former glory. What happened instead was direct-to-video movies, lawsuits, crippling debt, and two prison sentences.

Link to the Vanity Fair article on how Nat Lamp became such a mess. It's a long article but interesting.
