Yeah he struggled with an injury to his back during the filming of a Western ( a sadly common malady in the 1950s).
If you've ever watched Fantasy Island keenly (and I have) it's painfully obvious RM had a great contract. All the exposition at the beginning is filmed separately (sometimes on a sound stage) and Mr Roarke basically appears in the beginning, middle and end for the most part. He was probably on set two days a week while the guest stars do most of the heavy lifting.
