    Just read Watchmen 1st time

Ok I know the comics are 20 years old, but I've just been getting back into comics in the last couple of months. I'm not sure how me and my comic collecting buddies missed this back in the day, although I would've only been like 12 yeas old at that time. Having seen some recent posts on here and on aintitcoolnews about the movie, I decided to go pick up a copy of the graphic novel, holy friggin ***** ! wow! Is there anybody who hasn't read this? What other graphic novels would you guys recommend? I've been buying lots of old Charlton comics latley so this was right up my alley.

Don't feel bad I haven't read it either. Heck I didn't read The Dark Knight Returns until last year.

If your into more cape and cowl type stuff, I suggest New Frontier, Golden Age, Batman year 100, Dark Knight Returns, The Twelve (its a monthly right now TPB later), other non super hero stuff: Rocketo, Hellboy, Sin City

Watchmen is one of my all time favorites. I stopped buying comics years ago (just got to the point where I felt they were too expensive) but I still pull out Watchmen, along with V for Vendetta, Miller's original Dark Knight, and give a re-read. They still hold their power.

I am just rereading Watchmen for the umpteenth time, I can't believe how much I missed. I only discovered it in the late ninties, I was around for it's intial release but couldn't distinguish the hype from the regular "Wolverine's got a new costume" stuff at that time.

If you enjoy Watchman or Miracleman, or even Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, I suggest picking up a copy of the novel Superfolks by Robert Mayer.

I was blown away by Alan Moore's "genius" until I read it and discovered pretty much that each of these storylines were taken from bits and pieces of Superfolks. Granted, Alan Moore did a MUCH better job at presenting it. Superfolks reads like a 3 yr old who watched PM magazine for the first time wrote it at times, but the revolutionary themes Alan Moore is often credited with are there.

If you enjoyed Watchmen, you might enjoy this book, being that it is cited as being one of the many influences.

Ya, and pick up MiracleMan if you can. It can be pricey!

Cool, I'm definitely going to check out all these suggestions. I think one of the reasons I put off reading Watchmen was I thought of it as a "spoof" on super-heros, sort of like "Mysterymen" or "the tick", for those who haven't read it, it's far from it. That last panel is absolutly haunting, I mean you know what must happen, but it's pretty much still left up to the reader. yeah, haunting is the right word, wow.

like there are with "real" books, there are a host of classics that most people agree are nearly Essential Reading. my list off the top o' my head:

Watchmen (tho you did that already!)
                        Dark Knight
                        Batman: Year One
                        Daredevil: Born Again
                        Kingdom Come
                        V For Vendetta

...i'd also add the complete run of Preacher, Y The Last Man, Kyle Baker's Plastic Man (for a change of pace!), Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", Jeff Smith's Bone, the first 20-30 issues of Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise.

oh, and JLA #200. you HAVE to read JLA #200.

Watchmen is one of those books you can read again and again and always find something new.

As for other books, the main standards have already been listed. I would also recommend Moore's run on Swamp Thing. Some good stuff in there.
