The Origins of DR. DOOM!!! [Pic Heavy]

My favorite character in Twisted Toyrfare Theatre was Dr. Doom, a hilarious fountain of impotent rage. Years later, when Toyfare was cancelled, I decided I wanted a Dr. Doom of my own, and started searching. That's when I found Mego never actually made him and that he was a Charlee Flatt custom. If I wanted a Doom, I would need to make one myself! I first found the handy guide on how to make your own Doom on this website using Iron Man and started there, more than six years ago. I got a naked Iron Man, but found that the usual Knight/Tin Man parts didn't give me quite the look I wanted and Doom was put on the backburner. Last year, I discovered Charlee used a LJN SWAT body as the basis of his Doom to give his a bulkier look. I found that Doc Mego had something that looked similar- the buff swivel bicep body. I could finally make a Doom that looked like the one I wanted! I promptly lost all the Doom parts I ordered in a whirlwind of spring cleaning, until I uncovered them earlier this year.

    Parts Used:

Iron Mask head from Dr. Cyclops
Tunic/hood & cloak/belt/Swivel bicep body from Doc Mego
    Gloves from CTVT
Bolts on joints are plasticard I used a one-hole-punch to make into circles
    Brads and string from Micheals
Paints by me- I used my old Warhammer paints- Chaos Black spray basecoat, Boltgun Metal for the armour and then a matt varnish spray to protect it. The varnish darkened the paint a bit, which you can see in the comic in the two panels above the Fantastic Four.

Painting Doom was pretty much the only thing I was sure I could do for this custom, as I've painted Warhammer for years (had to quit, took too much time and $) but man, this project gave me a whole new appreciation for the skill of the people on this board!

Doom fits right in with the rest of the team.

You'll be pleased to know that the Iron Man I didn't end up using got restored instead. Haven't gotten around to putting his button back on yet and his belt is in the mail.

This project was a true labor of love that took 2260 days to complete (typical me, lol). I hope you all enjoyed a slightly different take on our favorite Latverian- Dr. Doom!

            Wow!
What paint did you use for the body?

Probably the best Mego-style Dr. Doom I've seen!

Awesome! I used my old Warhammer paints- Chaos Black spray basecoat, Boltgun Metal for the armour and then a matt varnish spray to protect it. The varnish darkened the paint a bit, which you can see in the comic in the two panels above the Fantastic Four. I'll add this to the original post, since you're the second to ask about it. The paint in the elbow and knee joints are holding up so far with the varnish, but it's scraping off in the area the leg meets the pelvis. I can hide that under Doom's tunic, you might need to figure something out for your Torak though.

I wanted to make something resembling Charlee Flatt's Dr. Doom from Twisted Toyfare Theatre, rather than the standard Doom using Knight or Tin Man parts. Rather than cover the body with armour, this Doom's body is armour. That's why I used the bulkier swivel bicep body and added the "bolts" on the elbow/knee/ankle joints. The way the feet ended up wasn't my first choice- I got some Flatt-style boot feet, but when they arrived, they looked much different than in the pictures, making the "barefoot" option much more appealing. Anyway, here's a look at the original TTT Doom, who also goes "barefoot," but with less toe detail, with mine next to it:

I admit the eyes were the most challenging part of the face and it took a few tries to get the look I wanted. In person it looks like his eyes are focused right on you, looking down on you. I didn't want to paint the pupils in the middle of his eyes like he was staring off into space.

                        Hopefully that answers your question!

Thank you! I know there have been many done before and this one is a bit different, so I'm glad so many of you enjoyed it!
