Do you ever use chopsticks ?

Seems like everybody on TV and movies eats their Chinese take-out with chopsticks.

I don't know anyone that does this (not including the workers at the Chinese restaurant when they're eating on break).

I live pretty close to a sit down fancy Thai restaurant and even there I've never seen anyone eat with chopsticks.

Maybe my neck of the woods is filled with only hicks

    Just wondering

I've been eating with chopsticks at Asian restaurants since I was a child. In many restaurants you have to ask for a fork. So basically I eat with whatever is in front of me. If there is a fork I use the fork, if chopsticks then I use chopsticks....

I didn't actually use one until I was an adult working for an ad agency and a client wanted Japanese but i just mimicked what I've seen before, very easy to master. Never had a problem.

I can eat with them (not masterfully), but prefer a fork. When my daughter was about 4, she had watched Mulan about four or five times and announced she wanted to eat with chopsticks like in the movie. My wife gave her a pair with a "this should be good" nod, and my daughter proceeded to eat with them as if she'd been raised eating with them.

I've had a few friends and co-workers who would grab them to eat take out or at a sushi place, but generally I think they were just trying to show off to people it didn't matter to.

A lot of Japanese don't use chopsticks for sushi either (some do, but some don't).

One of my friends since the 80s...is Japanese-American. Back around 1994...he invited me to one of his family gatherings in San Mateo, Ca. To make a long story short, they had tons of homemade sushi...I started eating them with chopsticks and taken little bites at a time, they all started snickering and laughing...I said, what am I doing wrong? They said, we eat sushi with our hands, the chopsticks are for sashimi, plus don't nibble on the sushi, place the entire thing in one bite, lol.

So right then and there...I learned the differences between sushi and sashimi...

On Chinese cuisine, I like to use chopsticks for chow mien and most food items, including steam rice...but always had a hard time with fried rice...I switch to fork for that, ha...

Where is the wasabi? I gotta have my wasabi...

Neat Trek-themed sushi set, but blue collar working Japanese would not use that, only the fancier nerdy folks would...

Always thought I was a chopsticks bad-***, until one day when the unthinkable happened. My wife and I got together with my Japanese buddy and his Chinese/Thai wife at our favorite Dim sum restaurant. Somehow I managed to snap a chopstick in half during our meal. Felt like the entire restaurant stopped and turned to look at our table. The next time we got together with that couple at the same restaurant, my friend's wife presented me with the equivalent of chopsticks training wheels.

You are transparent; I see many things... I see plans within plans.

I tried it once, and wasn't that bad, but it hurt my fingers. Now that I have arthritis, no way!

Yup - since I was a kid. I think at first it was part of the novelty of eating Asian cuisine, but now it's pretty second nature to me.

Mind you, my manors with them are probably terrible by most Asian culture standards.
