Star Fortress: Outer Space Play Set

Thanks to my pal David webmaster at Toynerd.com and owner of what appears to be Boston's coolest vintage toy shop. I have some wonderful shots of a toy that I see in catalogs all the time but have never owner or fooled around with.

    Lots more after the jump!

Star Fortress is one of those wonderful generic catalog items that was sold as an accessory to Star Wars or Buck Rogers figures.

Or sometimes it came with figures of it's own:

If you've ever been curious as to what kids got, here it is below:

It looks like you got a lot for your buck and I love that the vinyl gives it the vibe of a Mego Play Set.

    Thanks for the photos Dave!

I never had one of these, but I definitely drooled over it in catalogs. It all looks a little cheap now, honestly... but through my childhood eyes, it was epic.

Oh man. Now THAT's play value. That is simply fuel for the imagination.

Did Tara make this? Reminds me of the Hulk Hideaway quite a bit.

Looks like a lot of fun!

Hey! I had that. I've thought the name was "Star Base" for about twenty years.

The cardboard pieces were junk, but the plastics were awesome. For some reason, I felt it made the perfect base for Secret Wars Magneto.

It was horrible to store. It fit nowhere because a hexagonal mountain isn't quite natural. The laser cannon survived. My kids have it in one of their figure bins.

          Thanks for the memory, Pali!

Love the Empire 4 packs. That's some awesome selection too.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

I had that playset! It was awesome, the little polygon pod that came with it was a rocket that opened up to put figures in, used it with Star Wars, Buck Rogers and Battlestar figures with it all the time.

So this doesn't come with the plastic laser cannon as featured in the ad?

This would've been nice for Mattel's Starbird toy.

I don't know... Starbird had a pretty awesome playset already.

Without regard to that, the Star Base can't be used as a playset for Starbird? Interesting..
