He would have ruined the movie. Think Richard Pryor in Superman III

Yeah, thank god that deal fell through. Don't get me wrong, Eddie Murphy was the man back then, arguably the biggest star at the time...but he would've changed the movie from Star Trek to a Murphy comedy flick.

I mean, Catherine Hicks was not perfect, a limited B-level actress who was somewhat annoying to me...but at least she blended well with the cast...and didn't take away from the Trek experience.

LOL, if you hadn't posted it, I would've.

Back when TNG was announced, my brother drew a cartoon of obnoxious hollywood casting for the TNG crew (who hadn't been announced yet). His drawing included Bruce Willis as the Captain, but Eddie Murphy was part of the crew, and he somehow predicted Whoopi Goldberg two years before she'd be cast! I still have it somewhere, but it's filled with profanity, so I can't post it.

What's ironic about that is Whoopi Goldberg turned out to be of of TNG's best characters IMO. I also think it's Whoopi's best role.

I would have loved to see Murphy as Kirk's love interest.
