Oh...I think this movie killed any dreams of us 70s kids (w/ the exception of Jeff Dunham) becoming ventriloquists.

I just remembered I had a World's Finest comic with a Vigilante story featuring his enemy, the Dummy, who was the spitting image of Charlie McCarthy. It made me assume Charlie was a villain!

This commercial terrified me as a kid. Seriously could not get out of the room fast enough when it came on. Funny thing is, the movie isn't very scary at all.

I had a Charlie McCarthy, and I even nabbed a ventriloquism book by Edgar Bergen at an estate auction when I was a kid. I recall that Laurel & Hardy dummies were also offered in some catalogues.

I never could understand the popularity of Edgar Bergen.

He's got to be the absolute WORST ventriloquist EVER

lol His greatest success was on radio. I'd say, personally, it was his characters and material more than his technique, which was inconsistent. Still, Henson was a huge fan and wasn't The Muppet Movie dedicated to Bergen?

I enjoy ventriloquists. but I can't stand Jeff Dunham.

I find some of his stuff funny, but he's a better comedian than ventriloquist. He's constantly moving his lips!

^ I'm OK with about 5 minutes of the Old Guy, because I find that grumpy old man humor funny His other characters just grate on me.

I think the amazing thing about Charlie is he was accepted as his own character. I saw a film--with W.C. Fields I think--where Charlie is the costar and they even use a child or little person in some action scenes. It was a riff on his radio escapades. Lots of double-entendre made him popular, too--somehow more acceptable from a dummy.
