Monogram launches Movieland Monsters from the crypt

1983 saw the Aurora monster models rise again when Monogram brought six of them back for the first time since Aurora folded. I remember being pretty excited to see them again and they would return every decade after that.

You can't keep a good monster down.

I remember the comic ad for these (which you previously shared below), and I wanted them, but I could never find them anywhere. Plus, at that age, I would have done a horrid job. I did do a set of Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman in the early 90s, and I still have them today!

These were the beginnings--along with "Super-Powers" kits--of my "adult" building of kits. I have them still.

Here are some mint boxed examples of the 1983 kits from my collection...I still need to track down Frankenstein.

The 1983 Monogram Mummy was my first monster model and set me on the path I still follow to this day.

I loved the Mummy kit particularly because it was molded in ivory-colored plastic and you could do a lot of washes and tints on the molded bandages while painting the flesh differently.

When Phantom was released 11 years later, I was thrilled.
