    Review- Count Dracula's Greatest Love

First let me admit that I've never seen a Paul Naschy film. Sure I know who he is, but nothing I have ever seen out of his pictures ever compelled me to watch one. Vinegar Syndrome just released a cleaned up Blue Ray/ DVD for this so I gave it a shot.

What a surprise! I really enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for gothic horror (thanks Hammer) and this had it in spades. Tons of atmosphere, an attractive cast with decent acting skills, and enough plot to keep me engaged.

It's not perfect, I think the first half is stronger than the second, but it's still worth your time.

For fans, how does this rate against his other pictures?

I've only seen a couple on those Mill Creek 50 Horror Movie sets, and the best of the two (or at least, the one with less incoherent cuts) was Werewolf vs. Vampire Woman. I quite enjoyed that one. Very creepy atmosphere about the whole film.

Naschy was a Universal Monsters fanatic, so a lot of his films channel that. The majority of his movies have two enemies, low budget (Assignment Terror) or just terrible incomprehensible US prints.

i'm a big fan of "Frankenstein's Bloody Terror" which doesn't feature Frankenstein but Sam Sherman has a commentary track that explains why and is worth the DVD price alone.

^Are there any good DVD sets out there with decent cuts of Naschy films?

I've yet to find many. My collection goes from good to bloody awful.

Hopefully companies such as Vinegar Syndrome (I just bought Dolemite from them last week) do a few more titles.
